I had to replace my fast idle lever today, and when I finally got everything put back together, it was really hard to shift. The roller that goes into that plastic track won't go in unless I raise the lever up a bit. What's wrong with it?

Re: OMC Control Help

Pretty hard to help you with no information as to which OMC control box you have. If you can, take a photo or two of it and post it here. You may have to use an online posting service, such as Photobucket, so that you can insert links to the photos in your post here.

Re: OMC Control Help

It's a 1985 control. Roller on 38 isn't matching with track on 23 unless the idle lever is up. Sorry about the large pics

Yikes! Those images are WAY too large! Please resize to no more than 640 x 480! If you don't have a suitable photo editing program, you can probably make the reduction with a utility provided by your photo hosting site. There is also an open source photo editor called "GIMP," which can be downloaded for free - just "google" it to find a download site.

Re: OMC Control Help

When you reconnect the two sections of the remote, the control arm must be in neutral and locked in place with the neutral lock slide on the handle engaged in the locking slot/notch.

See factory service manual for assembly:

"Control handle should not be able to move without releasing the neutral lock slide" (on the arm).

"If the neutral lock slide does not engage the notch in index plate when neutral switch is centered on the neutral cam,, it will be necessary to reposition either the control handle or the index plate."

Re: OMC Control Help

That's a throttle friction adjustment; you need it just tight enough that the handle will stay where you move it. Clockwise increases friction.
