Power trim Issue

I have a 2006 Merc 90 O/B. It's been great until this spring. Now the power trim only lifts the motor 1/2 way up. The trim motor runs fine and doesn't appear to bog down it's just that it won't lift the motor any further than 1/2 way.

I manually lifted the motor, drained the fluid which appeared ok, (not cloudy) and refilled. I then repeatedly lifted the motor manually and lowered under power several times to try to get any air out of the cylinder. When trimming up the ram lifts the motor only 1/2 way then slows and stops but the pump still runs and sounds fine. When I lift it further by hand and release it, it drifts back to the 1/2 way point where the ram will hold it with no further drifting down.. Any additional troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And, yup, just out of warranty!!

Re: Power trim Issue

so its full of oil and still drifting down and wont go all the way up, there is a knob on the side for the pressure release, is it tight so that it don't leak. that may keep it from going up.

Re: Power trim Issue

Hi Ross, nothing leaking that I could find. Put newspaper under it overnight thinking the same thing. My guess is there's some internal seal that's letting it bypass. What really confuses me is it drifts down to 1/2 way and then stops with the piston holding it under pressure at the 1/2 way point. If it were a bad seal, it would quickly drift all the way back down to the lowered position. My guess is air that I just can't get out of the system. I'll have to have a mechanic look at it I guess. Just didn't want to spend the $$ for a simple fix.. But again, I am a boat owner and you know the old $aying!!
