please help-98 johnson 115 faststrike weird problem

i was at the lake today. my 98 johnson 115 v4 faststrike-when you start it(in neutral), there is a beep and a system check gauge that goes through 1 red light for each of the 4 warnings.

so i pulled up on a spot and when i moved the throttle back to neutral before turning it off, there was this "click" in the motor and then the system check came on(see above). this isnt supposed to happen until you start it. i moved it into gear then back to neutral(running) and the motor "clicked" again and again the system check did its thing. i turned the motor off and back on and the usual system check came on, i put it in gear and back to neutral and it didnt do it this time(normal operation)

anybody have ideas?

the start up(system check) beep and on the gauge the red light flashes for each warning(this is just a system check to let you know all is well.

this whole check is only supposed to happen when you start the motor. if the motor is running and you shift back to neutral, the system check(see above) is not supposed to go off again(but it does sometimes)

this make sense?
