I have what i belive is an '85 120 johnson with VRO. motor has always ran great (bought from brother-in-law) this year it idles really rough and smokes, it stays that way through the throtle range. At WOT it clears out but sounds like it has a little surge in it(only noticable by ear). I found that the fuel filter also collects oil in the bottom of it. Engine seems to run within operating temp, has good water flow.
After some reading, it's sounds like maybe the VRO is dumping too much oil until WOT when the fuel catches back up and evens out. Plugs do not show signs of oil deposits,likely because it hasen't seen much idle or low range time. I will try to plug and pre-mix. Hopefully it works, but if I'm wrong any info would be great. I haven't went through the carbs (since it's always been winterized) but it will be the next step if needed.
P.S. has new plugs, I'm sure it has whatever Johnson recomends for oil as my B-I-L is very anal.
