1967 johnson 33hp jumping out of gear (again)

Had my 67 seahorse into the shop this spring after some tips on here about needing a new clutch dog and forward gear. Had a local marina do the work and they said they could repair the linkages for $100 and it would be good to go (opposed to $500 for new). I have done a lot of other work on this motor this spring including new points coils etc, new head and gasket as the old one was shot, and new throttle and shift cables. It worked great for about 8 hours and now is slipping out of gear again whenever under a load in forward. I have disconnected the cables and shifted it by hand and it still happens. Is this definetly the clutch dog again or could it be something else?

What are the symptoms of a sheered flywheel key? We had to replace that as well and then torqued it back to 105. I want to make sure it is not just a sheered key before tearing apart the lower unit for to work on the dog.

Thanks for any help.

Mark the prop at the hub, and see if it is slipping.

"they could repair the linkages for $100 and it would be good to go (opposed to $500 for new)."

What did they repair? Shift linkage? Shift coupler? Doesn't sound like they did anything regarding the clutch dog/forward gear. These are the parts that wear and cause it to jump out of gear. Yes, it probably would be $500 to replace with new. You may want to look for a good used lower unit and switch it out.

If the flywheel key was busted, engine wouldn't run good, if at all - would probably backfire as timing would be off.

Thanks for the reply's. Good to know I don't need to mess with the flywheel anymore.

Just replaced the prop completly as the one I had was pretty beat up from running in the river so I can rule that out once I hit the lake this evening.

As for the repair they said they welded and then machined down the dog and the forward gear. One thing I did notice when looking it over today is that the shift lever on the side of the motor is in a bit different place than it used to be. Looks like they lowered the bolt behind the lever to the lowest setting it can go on that adjustment plate. What affect does adjusting the lever position have on the shift rod height? i.e. if they moved the bolt all the way down did that lower or raise the rod height in the lower unit.
