1997 faststrike 175HP Johnson

I am having trouble with idling after the motor warms up. It runs out good but will not idle. It sputters and pops and evidentually dies. It will start right back up and take off but not idle. Has anyone else had problems like this and if so could you please tell me know how you fixed the problem. Thank you.

Sounds like the motor may have been sitting for a while. If so the carbs may need a good bath. You could have some water in the fuel, check the water seperator. Also make sure you have the correct Champion plugs in it.

my '94 Johnson 120 V4 is in the shop for exact same thing right now. First time in shop they replaced throttle body gaskets and drained old gas. Took it out and it did the exact same thing. It is back in shop and now they tell me it needs new "reed plate gaskets". I posted another thread about this to ask the guys on here if they feel like that is a reasonable diagnosis. I am waiting for a reply. I will let you know what I find out. Good luck with your problem.

Thanks for your answers. I should have been more specific. I have taken the tank completely out and cleaned it. The boat has not been setting. But I have thought about the carbs. I am ordering a kit and plan on cleaning them. Thanks again.

Man these faststrike motors and idling. I hate to bad mouth these motors but i bet your could find 2 or 3 thousand similar posts on this same subject. Its something in the carbs, crappy reed valves sucking air, dirty jets or just out of sync real bad. I don't know, but i do know my next motor won't be a lemonrude.

Worse mistake i ever made was getting rid of my mercury mariner 135. It smoked, but it never fell on its azz like this peice of crap evinrude i have.

make sure your linkage is set like this.
