shimming a lower unit?

Okay, so my volvo outdrive..the one I ask about every other day! :D

its a 290. If i were to put a 280 lower unit on the upper, would I need to shim it?

If so...what in the world is that?

Most Volvos I have worked on have shims between the upper case and the lower leg.The bearings in the upper need clearance so the bearings don't rub on the lower case.
I don't know how it's done,sorry.J

well if i change lowers, but its still a 290 does it need shimming?

Absolutely.
When you put a new lower on, you MUST Use the bearing race on the vertical shaft from the NEW lower unit, and it needs to be reshimed.
