Local chain to replace bearings?

I don't want to do it myself cause I always run into issues. Last time I tried it on a different trailer I could not even get the hub off. Landlord frowns on me doing repair work in my back yard anyway.

So now we just picked up a 1999 Starcraft trailer which holds a 14 foot aluminum and I want to get the seals, race and bearings replaced but I won't go to a boat dealer.

I tried Monroe but they don't do it. Anyone know a chain might do the work reasonable?

Why do you feel the bearings need to be replaced. If there is nothing wrong with them, have them repacked and away you go.

Re: Local chain to replace bearings?

Because for the labor it's going to cost me to repack them it won't cost me that much more to just replace them at the same time.

I don't want my daughter to be driving in the mountains late at night and have a bearing fail after I just paid to have the old ones repacked.

For less than $20 for the whole bearing kit per side it doesn't make sense to me to worry about servicing a 10 year old bearing trying to extend it's life.

So I rather have the same technician pack a new bearing rather than re-pack the old ones.

It's like when I used to see people running a $2 spark plug thru a sandblaster unit or wire brush them to be re-gapped and reused.

There's frugal and then there is just plain foolish!

Go to a marine place ? For most non marine reapair facilities it's not going to be worth the hassle IMO.

Napa service might be able to do something for you as Napa has junk like that.

Most locally owned tire and wheel places will do it. They will probably charge you $45.00 per side plus parts.

If your old bearings are still servicable, and you still want to change them take the old ones repack them, and then vacuum seal them in a bag this way you'll have replacments on hand if they ever fail.

why not just take the trailer down to your local mechanic to have them install the bearings/race and seals

Almost any car repair shop will do that work for you.

You can also check with any companies around you that build utility trailers. Most of them also do trailer repairs.

trailer bearings are exacly the same as front bearings on a rear wheel drive car so any auto shop can do it.
