I'm looking at a 1993 Bayliner Jazz with trailer. They are asking 200 dollars. The engine needs a complete rebuild. Me and a friend were thinking about splitting the cost and using it as a project. We have rebuilt auto and both two stroke and four stroke fourwheeler engines, so the rebuild won't be such a big deal i don't think. The boat has a three cyclinder two stroke, it is not oil injected because it takes mixed gas. Through research i have narrowed the engine down to a mercury sportjet 90 with a force powerhead. I have also learned through research that the motor is underpowered and basically junk. is there any other engine that will fit or mesh with this boat? maybe a more powerful one or atleast more reliable? can i find a better project boat for under 500? we want something fun and cheap. willing to do engine work, paint everything! please any insight would be appreciated! thanks in advance

Should you buy? If you like the boat and enjoy rebuilding then the answer is yes. If you intend to sell it and make money, then the answer is no.

The three and four cylinder Force blocks all had the same mounting pattern and crankshaft splines, and the controls were the same too. SO: you could swap in a 120 or 125 Force block. HOWEVER: I am not familiar with squirt engines but I do know that engines and impellers are usually matched to each other. You may need to change the impeller for the larger engine just as you would change a prop.

... you may find the o/b the easy part.. at 200 bucks the boat itself sounds like a re-do cause the trailer itself is worth 400 bucks. check the deck, stringers, interior, wiring, and transom. got any pics or knowledge on how the craft was stored?

I have been told that you do need to change the jet drive in order to benefit from a larger engine - folks have tried swapping the 90 to 120 and found no real speed benefit. It is a bummer you couldnt engineer a yamaha or kawasaki jet ski motor, they are excellent and bulletproof.
