I picked up a small Ted Williams 4hp motor at an estate sale, to use with my canoe. Not sure on the year.

It is a tecumseh, air cooled motor. Here are numbers on the Taq 7824441 and 642-15D I don't know if it is 2 or 4 cycle? From what I understand I can use unleaded gas with a 2 cycle and 30 s.a.e oil. The mixture is a 1/4 . Should I use 5w 30 or 10w 30 in my mixture?

I have done some searching on the forum and got a few of my questions answered and where to get the manual. However I want to mess with the motor this weekend and I won't have a manual by then.

This motor has sat for a number of years, it seems to have good compression still. I'm sure it will need a carb kit and a new plug. Any other suggestions or recommendations on getting this motor to run?

edit: Looks like it is a 2 cycle.

Re: Sears Ted Williams 4hp

Ok I found the sears model number 217-58525-0

couple quick questions on starting it

1. there is a gas valve on right side that opens and closes, for tilting and and external tank. Does unscrewing this valve open the gas line to tank on the motor? I'm using the tank on the motor.

2. Where should I set the idle adjustment lean to rich when trying to start the motor.

3. This is an air cooled motor, do I still need to start in water?

4. Gas seems to be leaking out the exhaust, is this carburetor related.

5. I'm using 1/4 mixture with my chainsaw oil, is this correct.

Thanks in advance, I do plan on ordering in the manual but just can't wait I want to mess with it now :D

1) yes this opens the gas to the carb from the onboard fuel tank. Close it when you use an external tank.

2) Rich

3) Absolutely yes. These are actually semi-aircooled. There is still an impeller to cool the exhaust which keeps the engine cooler. At least if it is like my 7.5hp. Starting out of water burns the impeller up

4) Sounds like the carb needs rebuilt. Mine puked gas all over until I rebuilt the carb. Float needle on mine was gummed up pretty nasty and the seat was worn. Just kept letting fuel flow through.

5) I can't say I know the correct ratio for your engine. Mine is 50:1

Your motor is a 76.Built by Eska for Sears. It uses a Tecumseh air cooled powerhead with a water cooled exhaust leg.It uses a water pump.
Unfortunately not a great choice for a motor.I want let you know before you start putting money into it.Before starting down that road read the game fisher/Sears posts with model number beginning with 217.Also Eska posts.
These motors are real heart breakers.Running at there best(seldom) they are noisy, vibrate, and are somewhat underpowered. While parts are availavle
they are a pain only available in a few places, and can be expensive. You can find part numbers at the sears site with your model number, not likely to find parts. You'll have to go through the fuel system with special attention to all passages and jets( normal for any motor that has been sitting. If you can do this without having to buy a kit(if you can get one. you'll be ahead.Probably have to change the impeller.About $35.It may have solidstate ignition
hopefully you have spark.I think its best to sell or part out, put the money toward a 3,4,5,5.5,6hp Evinrude/Johnson motor 52-73.They are all twins(smooth)reasonably quiet and more powerful than the 4.Routine parts are available dozens of places including right here at iboats,BRP dealers, down the street at your local NAPA store and bunches of venders on the net.
These are wonderful little bullet proof easy to work on motors.
There may be a few here that have had success with the Eskas.I hope they speak up,maybe they will have some tips.
I forgot to mention Eska has been gone about 24 years.

You can get just about every part you would ever need from these four places

http://www.smallenginedistributors.com/default.asp They have NEW shortblock engines for some of the ESKA models

http://www.certifiedpartscorp.com/ They bought ESKA out and still carry alot of there parts. They also recently purchased alot of Tecumseh holdings so if you have a tecumseh based outboard this is a great place to get parts.

http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/eskaparts.htm These guys have everything just about. Some things you just cant get but other than that they have a good selection.

and last but not least. eBay. You can usually find a wealth of parts from people who just dont care to fix it and would rather part their outboard out instead.
