I got the aq125b engine/ 270 outdrive trophy today.

I have a couple questions.
1. I want to do a complete tune up, is there a manual for this set up?
2. from what i understand the water pump is on the engine only there is no pump in the drive?
3. The gear ratio for the 270 is determined by the lower unit only?
4. What are the appropriate spark plugs, points etc tune up part numbers?
5. Where is a good place to get a carb rebuild kit?
6. The 270 does not use drive oil but regular 30 w oil is this correct?

1. Here's a link to the Volvo Website. Type in aq125b in the the engine type box and hit enter. There is some info there. Don S has the oem manuals.

2. correct, only on the engine

3. correct, lower has the gear ratio.

4. You can get all your tune up parts hear on Iboats oem or aftermarket. I got mine at napa.

5. Not sure on the carb kit, may be a dealer item.

6. Straight 30 in the drive.:)

I got a carb rebuild kit on ebay $38 shipped was great. Do a volvo search, I see the all the time.

I found the user manual it has a lot of good stuff thanks for the link. I will check out ebay for the carb kit. I have yet to find the manuals. I have a question. If i was to build a v8 for this beast lets say 250 hp would the 270 handle it? I know i would have to change the ratio and get a new exhaust system and y pipe... but would the drive be ok? Also when I spin it in neutral it makes a little bit of noise is this normal?

Sooner or later you'll have to remove the upper gear box on the drive and examine the U-joints and check for water damage. It is also the way to replace the bellows. The bellows need to be replace every two years. What kind of noise? Grinding? Does it change when you turn the steering wheel?

As far as the V8 goes, Volvo was using the 270 on V8s in the early seventies but switched to the 280 outdrives on the bigger engines. Because of this you may have trouble finding a different lower with the correct gearing. I'm not sure about regearing your current drive, but that may be your best option. I'll bet you would need special tools however.

One other thing is that your transom shield may not accept the new Y pipe as the V8s have two idle relief ports and the 4 cyl. have only one. Not sure if you can modify that or not. Have a look at your transom shield. You should have a rubber hose coming through beside the exhaust bellows. Mine has a hose on both sides, What does yours look like? If you have only one idle relief you may find it easier to go thru hull exhaust. Save on the Y pipe all together.

I thought the 280 270 290 lowers were all the same ? The noise is more of a very soft ticking should the dive be silent in nearural when I spin the prop by hand like a merc? Also, the bellows are new

Some are some aren't, they are very close but different enough to not be interchangeable.

The reality is that even if you found a lower, you still need a complete marine engine with all parts. It would have to be a donor boat.

Does the drive have power trim? Hydrolic? Or electric tilt?

How does it perform now?

on the dash it says power trim/..... there is no trim rams and I have trim tabs. It is nothing like the gen 2 alpha one dirve in my sig. So, I wnna learn all the diferences between the volve merc world so I can get comfertable with them like I was with my last boat. The tilt trim motor sounds like death when I run it but it is brand new. The boat will work great after a tune up the idle circuit in the carb is gummed. The 270 and engine were rebuilt by a good local shop 6 months ago the fuel and spark system need to be gone through and tuned up.... But I got the boat at a steal with 2k worth of electronics ( gps chart plotter fishfinder) and a 2007 15hp johnson4 stroke kicker worth at least another 2k. The engine and od had 2500 worth of work ( from the shop I talked about and he had recipts). SO It has all new bellows and the body is in great shape. I only paid 3400. And I have 2k more to put in to it. So, now I will tune and fix up this engine. In the winter build up a good 350 engine and put it in over the winter as a project. And sell the 125b that is in it now. I will go with though hull with mufflers for the exhaust for sure...
