Ignition Switch Wiring Help

I have a 2002 Sailfish 188C with a 2002 Yamaha 115TLRA motor. I'm trying to replace the ignition switch. The original that I'm trying to replace has no part numbers and I don't believe it's made by Yamaha. It has six posts for the wire hook-ups. They are labeled M, M, B, C, I, A and S on same post.

The new switch I purchased from West Marine is made by Cole Harsee Co. Model # M-924-BP. It has the same number of post. They are labeled MAG, MAG, BAT, CH, IGN, ST.

The wires from the boat harness that I need to attach are Black, Yellow, Brown, Blue, White and Red.

Can someone please explain which wires go where? I'd really appreciate your help.

Re: Ignition Switch Wiring Help

On your existing switch you said "A" and "S" were on the same post. That is not possible nor would it work. Why? Because "A" = Accessory which powers the gauges. "S" = start which engages the starter solenoid when you turn the key to start. If what you said was true, then the only time the gauges would work is when the key is turned to start and even an engineer on meth would not wire the switch that way. You need to look again as the actual "S" (or "A") terminal may be broken off.

Now then -- figuring out what is what is a matter of deduction:

"M" = Mag (both times)
"S" = "ST" starter solenoid
"B" = "BAT" battery positive from the engine haness
"C" = "CH" Choke - the choke or priimer system is energized when you push the key in during startup. If your engine has primestart you don't need or use this function.
"I" = IGN which powers the ignition. This terminal is typically used only on I/O (auto based) engines since they use a battery ignition rather than magneto system. What you have is a universal ignition switch.
"A" = accessory. Since there is no "A" terminal on the new switch, you connect whatever wires were connected to that terminal on the old switch to the IGN terminal on the new switch.

Now the real problem will be if you didn't mark the wires when you removed the old switch.

Well, after another look, you are absolutely right about the "A" post being broken off. So I have a missing "A" post and a seperate "S" post. Unfortunately, I didn't mark the wires when I took the old switch off (Not a smart thing to do, I know). I was hoping to find something online from the manufacture but no luck.

Also, it looks like the "A" post on the original switch may have been broken off on purpose because I don't see any wire that was or is supposed to be hooked-up to it.

Re: Ignition Switch Wiring Help

Okay, I got it figured out. It's:

MAG - White wire
MAG - Black
BAT - Red
CH - Blue
IGN - Yellow
ST - Brown

Thanks for taking the time to help!
