I have a 1982 Mercury 115 inline 6 cylinder. Does anybody know how to test the switch boxes? It will start fine and will go to full throttle in neutral but when I put it in gear and go faster than very slow speed it will shut down immediately. I am trying to narrow down what the problem could be.

You can't test them without special equipment. And even then you can only test the input and output voltages with a DVA.

Don't rev the motor in neutral. it will blow up. You may have a carb issue. se if you can coax it to rev up with a little choke. Alternatively, put a timing light on the plugs and see if the spark quits when you try to rev up.

I need to get my boat back to the water to try your suggestions but I also have another question. Would swapping the switch boxes with each other tell me anything about the switch boxes? If a switch box is bad, should both boxes be replaced or is it ok to just replace the bad one?
