im thinking of putting a fuel water separator (the spin on type) between the tank and motor, where else i guess, but started to think will it put to much resistance in the fuel system? Is my motor big enough to pull this fuel through this system and not starve the carbs?

i have a 1981 (2cyl) johnson 60Hp

Thanks nate

The reason i am putting this in is that when i got the boat the guy had a 12 gallon tank on the deck, but there is a belly tank in the boat. He said there was not a problem it was just big and the motor does not use that much fuel, which it dosent. My thoughts were he had probles with water or trash. Leaks are also a possibility i guess , although i was able to siphen some old gas out to drain the tank with the line, the hole if there is one could be above this point? The other problem is that when he redid the floor he sealed it up in there and with the new console there is not gauge, this is not a problem i know how much fuel i use and can just keep it filled, and i also though about putting a 3 gal portable tank in the back just incase.

I just want to get the 12 gallon tank off my deck and free up floor space in this 16 ft center console!

Re: water seperater

It will work fine, especially if you use the full sized filter. Water separating filters work on gravity and need to be mounted upright in the most stable position possible, such as inside near the transom. They are best mounted higher than the tank so that you don't have to worry about an anti-siphon valve.

Be sure that the filter is designed for outboard use.

also i forgot to look at what size fuel hose is on this size motor. I beleive its the 5/16 i dont think this small motor has a 3/8 line. I am going to get the barbs on my way home and some line to install it.

Re: water seperater

i hooked it up too the boat out, here is what i observered. Normal operation, but when i reach down ofter a minute of running or so the hose ball is soft and can be pumped 3-4 times till hard, it never seems to starve the motor, but this concerns me that it could i have by passed it for the moment. There is about 6 ft of hose with the primer ball in it before the filter and then like 4 ft of 5/16 line after the filter. The bottom of the filter sits about 1-2 inches below the top of the tank. I just dont want to have a restriction and burn out a cyl. To compare when the fuel line is directly hooked to the motor once pumped firm to start the motor while running it will stay firm but not rock hard, it may only give you half to one pump to get it back rock hard? Is this normal operation for having a fuel water seporator in the setup?

Re: water seperater

Exactly what filter are you using? Are the fittings all 5/16 ID or larger?

You are changing tanks as well, so it's hard to know where a restriction might be. Pull a vacuum on the tank head; it could have a block in the pickup screen or in the anti-siphon valve.

The full-sized marine water separating fuel filters are used on motors as big as the largest V8, so yours is not a challenge for the correct filter.

Re: water seperater

sorry i did left out things as ezeke points out. I have figured out that the belly tank leaks, so im using a new (3-4 yr old) above deck red (Todd i think?) tank 12gals. I have an Attwood fuel water separator with the attwood filter on it. The fittings in the filter housing were 3/8 thread, so i have a brass reducer to neck it down so the 5/16 barb fittings screw into them. Hope this answers any questions.
