could you guys please tell me the symptoms of a bad rectifier ? I have a 1988 85 hp force, it is charging 16.5 @ WOT,plus sometimes it runs 29-32 mph & 4400 rpm ,then sometimes it runs 37-39 @ 5200 rpm...thanks !

These rectifiers are not regulated so it is not unusual to get 16 volts out of them. The rectifier is not going to affect the power output of your engine. Try changing the fuel pump diaphram if it hasn't be changed in a while.
Also, Decarb the engine if it has not been decarbed.

The only way to get your voltage down reliably is to change to a regulator. You can review the sticky at the beginning of this forum to see if you want to do it or not. It saves your batteries and electronics.

The ignition systems on these engines are completely separate from the charging system. The alternator segment of the stator and the rectifier simply recharge the battery to replace starting power used.

The rectifier will therefore have no effect on the speed and power the engine is producing. It can, however affect the tachometer but your speed is more or less agreeing with the tachometer readings.

Losing power and gaining it back is a thankless and frustrating job to diagnose; it could be so many things, and the problem NEVER occurs while you are testing for it.

So start with the simplest, the fuel system, and be sure everything is performing properly from the tank pick-up to the carbs. As John said, change the diaphragm on general principles.

If fuel system corrections do not solve the problem, then go to electronics. Here, an intermittent short or intermittent bad ground will cause much tooth gnashing. So just do what you can. Check all wiring for corroded connections, broken wires, and grounds. If the problem is due to an intemittent problem with a coil, CD box, or trigger, it is going to be very difficult to find. And the parts are so expensive that you can't go replacing them willy-nilly to check.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill with this rectifier thing. The battery is your regulator. Just don't ever run the engine with battery disconnected and you will be fine.

Is it possible that you ran engine with battery disconnected? That can damage solid state ignition modules and other electronics. Maybe you should but whole ignition and cannabalize it for parts until yours runs better.

Sorry to say i havent found it,it still does the same thing.I was wondering from rritt ,is the parts in the link @ seaway the correct ones or will i need to call them & get the correct ignition assembly for my engine ? I think thats the way to go,getting tired of chasing a ghost...thanks for all your help!
