whats up guys i have a 1985 force 125 ob and i added a tell tale today .i installed a aftermarket temp guage to it last year ,i drilled a hole in the water jacket of the head and tapped it so i could put the temp senser on the head .i removed the plug in the top of the head to install the tell tale,i got it all done and started my motor on the muffs ,i ran it for about 5 to 10 minutes and noticed the temp guage went to about 140 to 150 degrees, my motor has a 110 degree thermostat and the temp gauge has always read 110 degrees so i took the tell tale off and put the plug back in and started it back up for another 5 to 10 minutes and it ran at 110 degrees,i would rather have my motor run at 110 instead of 150 degrees ,somthing to think about for everyone who has added a tell tale to their motor ,it runs hotter

Thats a good point, perhaps you are diverting too much water in to tell-tale that otherwise would have been circulating around the cylinder walls and provinding cooling. Try reducing the nozzle diameter, this will restrict the flow from tell-tail and should solve your problem.

The fact that adding a tell tail diverts cooling water away from the cylinders has always been something of a concern with me. Plus, unless you spend most of your time looking behind you instead of in front of you while driving your boat, a tell tail won't do a whole heck of a lot to inform you your cooling system may not be working properly. In my opinion instead of adding a tell tail you maybe better off installing a pressure gauge on the dash right next to your temp gauge. At least this way, should you notice your engine running hotter then normal a lower then normal pressure reading may help to explain why as well as hopefully doing something about it before the engine suffers any damage.

I put a telltale on my '93 120....looks great....and gives peace of mind...but the hotter runnng issue is of concern...although my stern drives always run at 140....so...let's ask:

HAS ANYONE WHO HAS INSTALLED A TELLTALE HAD OVERHEATING PROBLEMS SINCE?

Thanks much,

Russ

Yes i did last year ,a new piston ,rings, and bearings later i took it off ,my 2 cents, the motor didnt come from the factory with one for a reson ,install a pressure guage or a tempeture guage instead of a tell tale or listen for your heat alarm, you dont change the water flow . plus you can see a guage much easier than looking back at your motor every 30 seconds to see if water is coming out

About two years now no issues. But i have an water restriction on mine.

In my opinion 150f degrease in an engine is not hot and 110f is to cool to burn the fuel properly. Are you sure you didn't lean out you engine to much?
Just my two penny's worth.

Well, I'm very sorry you had that breakdown...been there myself. However, overheating is caused by many things. I had a plasic bag wrap around my lower unit..bingo!! another time kelp off catalina...again overheating..yet again a water pump broke apart and got pieces in the powerhead....that was fun

Look at all the water cominhg out of the two exhaust holes on the leg, and that's not even 110 degrees....and the fact the motor has to have a thermostat to keep it at operating temp...that seems to say there's lots of extra water being put thru the engine by the water pump....

as far as it not coming stock....these are inexpensive motors (notice i did not say cheap...:) no tilt indicator, no VRO, no tilt switch on cowling....lucky they have an electric start!!

I agree with russ ,with the proper sized orfice[hole dia.]it should not effect cooling as the pump displaces more than enough water to handle a tell tale.If the fact of looking back bothers you ,why not run the hose up towards the front and dump off the side where all you have to do is glance over to see the stream of water? my two cents. This could be a start of whole new line of aftermarket featured products for FORCE outboard owners.

Feasible tell-tail add-ons :D:
Wash-down shower head
Live well pump
Water heater
Scuttle mechanism (Step 1: turn tell-tail inward at the dock with the engine running. Step 2: claim the insurance check)
Others...

Wow...i learn so much here...:)

love the "Scuttle mechanism"....did i miss the part about upping the life insurance on your wife and her napping on the boat while you engage this feature????

I thought this was only available on motors from New Jersey....

JUST KIDDING!!!!
