Hi , I have a 90 model mariner 150. The other day I took it for a spin at the lake and was going around 40 mph. All running good until I heard a squealing noise and the motor came to a stop and died . It did crank back up and I could get it to go at about 5mph but if I pushed it anymore than that it would just stall out and die also squeals a little. So it will crank and run just with no load at all on it.Kind of like a spun hub but with the motor stalling and squealing. I got home and put the muffs on it and found my pee hole was bone dry ( I even took the line off and it hasn't seen water in a while ). So my thinking is that it could possibly be the impeller or water pump? Do you think my motor is toast? I just hope I did not ruin it, cause money is tight, please help with your suggestions, thanks!

That sqealing sound may be the frying of your bearings, Sounds like your impeller failed, overheated the powerhead, and fried the bearings. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but these things happen.

OK, Run a compression test and post the results. We can then decide what to do.

Thanks for the replies guys, I did a compression test today and in all six cylinders I gat a reading of 110 psi , pretty even , is this low or about right? Could the squeling possibly be the broken impeller trying to spin? Also is there maybe some sort of failsafe to prevent the motor from complete damage? thanks!

Ohh BTW invest in an alarm if yours is out or a temp gauge, better yet water pressure gauge!

Compression is OK. Still need to check bearings. Remove spark plugs and turn flywheel by hand. Motor should turn smoothly, with normal crankcase compression, providing some resistance
