I replaced the impeller and just fired up my newly acquierd 1977 evinrude 6hp motor. It runs, and pumps good water, but there is an exhaust cover with a bolt missing I beleive, and water seeps out of this hole. I took some pics to show the hole and I am wondering if there needs to be a bolt in this hole. Please check out the pictures and tell me if in needs a bolt or not, and if not, is there supposed to be water coming out? check out the pictures at the photobucket link, I have much better results with photobucket rather than using the iboats resources for uploading pics. http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk205/ownerator84/1977 evinrude 6hp/

Yes. Run a small screwdriver in there and see if the screw broke off.

thanks for the reply's. I firgured there was supposed to be a bolt in there. I have a whole coffee can of bolts from an old johnson motor I took apart last year, I will look for a bolt to fit. Is there a certain length I should look for?

You could take another one out to see how long it is, but you should be able to tell if it's gripping something when you screw one in..

Take out the one next to it (carefully !) and try to match the length. I'm with crxess, though. Check to see if the old one is broken off in there. Those bolts just don't normally fall out.
