Hi there, I have I think a 1982 Merc 50 # 6097907

I picked up a couple of Mercury floats 1395-9022

There was a card in the package that indicated the level should be .320-.360" if I have a BA/BB carb.

The carb has BA3DT stamped on it. Is it a BA carb?

Is it a Walbro or Tillotson. My manual says .250" for the float level.

thanks

Re: Help me identify my Merc 50 Carb

Just installed floats on a 4 cyl 84 50 Mercury yesterday. Tillotson carbs I think have a double leaf shutter with spring on the choke and the Warboro have a single leaf choke shutter (I think). The plastic white float has a 5/16" float level setting and for the black float it is 1/4". So it is different for what kind of float that you are putting in. And it looks like you could use either float. The float drop is the same, 1/16" to 1/32". This info is for the carb with the intergral fuel pump which I think you should have for an 82. Also this is from my Mercury service manual and parts list for 77 and up.

Hope this helps.

Re: Help me identify my Merc 50 Carb

Hey, thanks for the great info. It really helps.

It would appear that I have the Tillotson carb with the double leaf shutter with spring on the choke.

I can't figure out what the spring does though.

I have the white floats so I'll set them to 5/16".

Thanks again, btw any idea why my Sierra fuel pump kit included a Brown Synthetic as well as a Black Rubber Check Valve Diaphram?

Re: Help me identify my Merc 50 Carb

Happy to help.

The double leaf is described as a relief device on the parts list so I would guess since it springs in, maybe it allows some air in to allow your motor to turn over easier? lock up issue? lower starter amps? Warboro does not have it. Do not know for sure. Maybe they were worried about the choke leaf sealing to tightly??

Mercury has the same brown and rubber check valve sheets in the intergral pump rebuild package. I put the rubber sheet next to the valve seat to seal and back up the rubber sheet with the brown sheet. So I use both of them back to back. Always worked for me like this.

Good luck!

Thanks again.

When you say "put the rubber sheet next to the valve seat to seal" do you mean the Fuel Pump Body when you say Valve Seat?

I did put them back together just using the Brown Gasket.
Contemplating taking them apart and adding the rubber sheet.

Re: Help me identify my Merc 50 Carb

Yes, valve seat to me would mean the metal plate that the valve seals against.

I have tried using just the rubber, just the brown and both back to back as described. All three worked and I have seen a number of diagrams that show all 3 different configurations in a diagram, although the diagrams that show the 1 sheet do not tell if brown or rubber. My logic was that the rubber seemed too flimsy to hold up long term and the brown would not seal as good as the rubber. So I use both. I am not sure it makes a lot of difference. They all worked for me! Go figure!

Good luck.
