85 johnson 70HP fuel filter installation

Hi all,

I need some help installing a fuel filter. I didn't take picture when i took it out 4 months ago so now i'm confused. I just rebuilt it and now ready to put it back together. I know the main fuel line goes into the black cap but not sure which of the other 2 outlet goes to which. 1 goes to the carb and 1 goes to the body, but not sure which one. Can someone help clarify which one. See picture. Thank you all

for clarification...that is the fuel PUMP, not a filter


one goes to a pulse port on the block...but I dont know myself from the photo

I have a 1988 to put back togehter this summer, and i will use that same pump...so ill wait for the answer as well

Thanks for clarification Bob. They should not put the word FILTER on the black cap. I'm a dummy.

was the word hand written?...just joking...

maybe that word filter ment that tube goes to filtered gas...cant answer that one

check out this thread specifically post number 3..looks like the words Filter only refers to a filter specific to the pump...not that the unit is a "filter"

might have a screen in there..

I am guessing a lot of boats and motors have no inline filter in the fuel delivery system as standard

As you're looking at the picture: The one on the right goes to the carb, Left to the engine. The black cap is the filter. It's just a very fine mesh screen. I just rebuilt my 84 & will let you know if that's wrong tomorrow. Taking the day off to test it & go fishing.
