I have a mercruiser 140 with an alpha 1 drive. i seperated the loer housing to changet the water pump and impeller and walaa this flat on one side and round on the other side piece fell out. i have no idea where it goes or if its even important. i've looked at it for 2hrs and still can't seem to find where it goes. the piece also has 5 holes in it on the round side. any help would be great.

do you have a manual for the stern drive as that would show all the pieces and where they go. look in the adults only section to find your manual.

good luck

Yes, I have a manual, and i couldn't get #6 to download from the stickey. this part is not shown anywhere. Not in the lower or upper unit. i mean when the lower unit slid down it just fell out. there couldn't have been anything holding it.

its about an 2 inches long on the flat side and then curved around. there are 4 holes along the curve and one in the center. i usually have extra pieces on my own. i don't need them falling from sky.

if it was just sitting on in between the upper and lower, i believe a melted exhaust shutter could make it that far through the exhaust sytstem and would be flat on one side, round on the other, w/holes in it for the rubber that melted away was adheared too.. just a guess...

an example of a exhaust shutter, intact.... http://www.iboats.com/Mallory_Water...0747858--**********.907061268--view_id.365220

i don't know on your perticualer rig. on mine, it's vary close to the top of the exhaust pipe. i'd take the bellows off the riser to exhaust pipe to go see it mounted to the exhast pipe..

your lower exhaust bellows (between the gimble housing and the bellhousing) can be ripped, cracked, whatever, w/o much consequence..

Re: extra piece from lower unit seperation

here's my new problem. mercruiser 140, alpha 1 drive. had the boat running fine today at less than 2k rpms. when i went higher than that water started coming out the valve cover where the flame arrestor on top of the carbuerator hooks up. i immediately thought blow head gasket or worse. i don't know what it means if anything with the higher rpms. any help would be appreciated. i just got the boat that had sat for 2 years. its an 86 searay cuddy cabin. got it for 1400 bucks. now i'm starting to get skeptical on wether i want to keep it. i like the boat, but.... already changed plugs, wires, impellerand pump, rebuilt carbuerator.

Well you have to ask your self WOW thats a hell of a deal what might be wrong with this boat. A boat that sat for 2 years with no maintnance problably needs some work. Andf at 1400.00 Im SURE it does.

Now this doesnt mean the end of the world. Welcome to the world of boats. Whene they run right they are grat when there is a problem they are a problem!

Its possible the engibe may not have been winterised and has a cracked block or it may be as simple as a head gasket, Hard to say until you start working on the problem.
