Don't know how to add my own additional info, so...:
Original problem - 2001 4-stroke - would not idle at all, ran fine at higher rpm with 1/2 to full choke, and would quickly rev up when choke pushed in, then immediately die. Hot or cold, no difference.
I didn't get any responses, and could not get into a shop schedule for days, so, after being told that it was 1) bad gas, 2) lacquer from bad gas, and 3), bad gas and too difficult to do without a manual, took the carb apart, found it to be perfectly clean. Blew the two small jets out, and reassembled(30 mins, no new parts) - idles like new. Just in case someone else out there has a smaller Merc 4-stroke with same problems...
