My 25hp evinrude overheated this weekend. I did not realize that it was over heating untill it was too late. got so hot it melted some of the cables and wires and some other plastic parts. Also melted the recoil starter mounts. It had a new impeller with only a few hours on it. I am not sure what happened. We may have sucked up some mud or grass that clogged the water pump. Motor was in tip top shape. The question is should I even consider making repairs or should it go directly in the trash where i won't have to look at it and kick myself for letting this happen.

There are usually at least a couple of good parts left. its always good to take it apart and see. if for no other reason than to see the damage, that way you have a better understanding of things.
And if theres nothing good if you or a friend have a welder you can make a piece of art (trophy) for the garage as a reminder what not to do.

It could be toast pmerritt, but, you'll never know until you take off the cylinder head. It IS an evinrude, and they are such well-made motors that they've been known to take some awful overheats and still run. But the heat at the very least, causes your head gasket to go and possibly the heads to warp and fail to seal the cylinders at all, dropping compression horribly. You can sand the head back flat for nothing, so that's no big deal. Just quit worrying, and take off the head. The instant it comes off you will know, even if you're not a mechanic most likely! It will be obvious, usually.
Even if your impeller was brand new, things can happen........your thermostat could have stuck shut, etc., etc.
Pull the cylinder head and hope for the best.

Re: Is my motor toast?

Motor is an 80's model. While adrift waiting for some help I tried to restart it. The interlock that prevents you from starting in gear had melted and was stuck locked. I used a pair of pliers to work it free. I then had to have someone hold the starter to the top of the motor as it had melted and come loose. With all that I was able to restart the motor briefly, but shut it down as a tow was being offered.

well it definately has possibilities, figure the cost or repair against the cost of replacement, and selling off lower unit.
