I was told you can take cover off of thermostat housing and remove thermostat to see if water is pumping through engine with it running. I tried this and no water was flowing through. Does this probably tell you that the pump/impeller is bad.

Maybe, but the water pump is not self-priming, so the water in the barrel that you are running in must cover the water pump which means the water should almost reach the mid-section. And, it should have time to fill the water pump before starting the motor.

The water should spit out of the exhaust relief hole all of the time the engine is running, water from the exhaust relief should increase in pressure and volume as the thermostat opens and as RPM increases.

This link is not the best running motor, but you can see his water flowing from the exhaust relief: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GIWEoVmMiA&NR=1

The water level is above the intake holes but water does not come out of exhaust relief hole. When I touch the exhaust cover or the cylinder head cover they are both very very hot so I just shut off the engine at that point. I will probably just drop the lower unit and check out the impeller. Thanks for the help.

Iwould say your impeller is shot or you have a blockage in the water tube. You can flush it by connecting a hose to the water tube (leg removed) and removing the stat cover and letting the water run. If you don't know the impeller history, change it. Best of luck. Rick.

The water intakes on the 9.5 are the primary, which is the cylindrical screen below the A/V plate and just above the propeller, and the secondary, which is the rectangular piece with four holes just above the A/V plate. The primary intake is 4" below the bottom of the water pump impeller and the secondary is 3" below the bottom of the impeller. You need to cover the waterpump so that it will prime when running in a bucket.

When you run the 9.5 in the lake in gear, the propeller forces water into the primary intake; you don't have that luxury in a bucket.

You may well need a new impeller, but if you put a new one in and don't prime the pump, you will still need a new one.

I am having the same problem with my 69 johnson 9.5 outboard. I am not clear about what you mean when you say you have to prime the waterpump, it is sealed. Can i take the thermostat out and pour water down the cylinder water jacket?

When you put the motor in a bucket, the water level needs to be up nearly to the bottom of the midsection so that the water pump is actually in the water. If the air bleed hole is clear, the water will then fill the pump housing.

It will work better if you give the pump time to fill before starting.
