Carb issue 120 merc i/o

Just bought my first boat. 82 MercCruiser Marquis 120 i/o. We took it for a test drive, the exhaust manifold has a small crack that leaks water. We already know we need to replace the manifold. While we noticed this, the carb started whistling at a constant pitch and stopped when I apllied more throttle. It also had a little bit of white smoke comming out the top of it. Is this happening because the engine is burning more fuel because of the leak? Or is this a seperate problem?

That steam is most likely water in your oil from the bad manifold....
The whistle is most likely a vacuum leak...
Replace the manifold & report back.....
Change the oil asap.....
