Hi all....I have a 96' 90HP serno 0G255002....looking for some advice on replacing the flywheel (org casting # 261-9007-C2). One of the magnets is cracked in 2 places, and loose.
Q....is it possible or if so, advisable to repair...maybe epoxy in a new magnet, or reattach the old magnet, even though it is cracked ?, I read somewhere that it should still work OK....I'm a little dubious of that claim.
Q...If best advice is to get a new flywheel, should I stay away from a used part.....do these flywheels have a known tendency to develop cracked, loose magnets ?
Q....Any advice on finding one at a decent price would be appreciated
Q....How about cross-referencing parts....I'm pretty sure from my research so far, that several motors use the same flywheel, and also that Merc, has re-numbered the part from that originally stamped on the flywheel.

A lot to ask....I appreciate any help

Re: Need a Flywheel ?

Do NOT even attempt to repair a cracked/broken magnet.

Cracked or broken magnets become TWO magnets very close together, each with roughly half the strength of the original.

Magnetic strength determines voltage produced, # poles determines frequency.

1/2 strength = low voltage output, with an increased frequency making the tach reading increase and no longer accurate.

Besides, if your adhesive fails, you could destroy your stator and the stator mount, which doubles as the upper bearing/seal carrier.

Just wondering if you had any luck finding a flywheel?

I'm looking for the same one. I had the same problem and the cheapest one I can find is $300+

Re: Need a Flywheel ?

Is anyone still looking for the flywheel mentioned above? I have a '96 Force 40 HP that I am parting out. Flywheel is in good condition. Numbers etched into it are 261-9007-C2. The only flaw in it is on the top rim there are two "hooks". I'm not sure what they are for, maybe pull starting if needed, but they are part of the original casting. Anyway, one of those is broken off, the other is fine. It does not affect the performance of the flywheel in any way. If you send me your e-mail address I can reply with pictures of the flywheel.

As far as that goes, I have pretty much the entire motor except a few pieces if anyone is looking for anything else.
