Howdy folks........

A buddy of mine asked me to help him with his Outdrive problems. We were out in it yesterday and we were putting along when it pretty much slipped out of Forward gear and went into Neutral on its own.

Now it will not shift into either reverse or forward........just stays in neutral. We checked the linkage at the back and it all seemed to be moving around properly.

Anyways, when we got it home we couldn't find the outdrive's manufacturer or model written anywhere so i'm here looking for help. I've posted some pictures to help.

The engine is an OMC 2.5L 4cyl, with Rochester carb, and was supposedly made in 1986.

Awesome..........just did a search for that model and it's definitely the one. Thanks a lot! Obsolete by the looks of things.

Probably not going to be cheap to repair.

No brand of outdrive affords a cheap repair. What you have is an OMC 400 Hydro-Mechanical shift outdrive.(1978-80) There are still good mechanics out there but make sure you get a reference before you leave the unit.

I have an aquaintance in Portland OR, who gets drives shipped to him from all over the country, to fix what the other so called experts tried to fix. He is still a bone fide OMC/Bombardier Dealer.

BTW, did you determine that the drive's shift cables, in the converter box are moving with your throttle lever?

I'm quite new to the whole stern drive thing.........

However, what we did was pull up the box covering the motor, and look at the linkage. There is a white plate with Forward and Reverse marked on it with markings in between.

All we really did was verify that this linkage was moving. And it was, you could watch it move with the throttle settings.

Other than that there wasn't much we could see out on the water. What would be the next step?
