hi i have a 1993 johnson 15hp and im changing the impeller i have the six bolts that hold on the lower unit off and i need help in direction to remove the lower unit. AM i suppose to unscrew the shifter rod linkage in order to remove the lower unit? Also i have heard that to take the lower unit off the engine must be shifted into reverse is this true? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a clamp that holds the two sections of the shift shaft together, lower the gear case and you should be able to see it. Shifting it can give you a little more space to access the clamp.

I had to shift mine to get enough room to get to the clamp. Mine was a hex head slotted screw but the slot was messed up so I had to make enough room to get a small socket in there. Keep in mind that you only need to remove the bottom screw of the clamp. If you loosen the top screw you can change the the connection length and mess up your shift linkage causing you to have to re-adjust it.

The lower screw has to come all the way out of the clamp. There is a groove in the lower shift shaft that the screw sits in. It should then just slide apart.

Good Luck!

YES! Change it. At the least replace the impeller. I would get the kit and replace it all, the housing, grommets, seals, etc. The cost of a water pump kit (less than $40) is nothing compared to the cost of the motor... obviously.

Are you running it on muffs or in a tank?
