Im looking to buy and ATV and want to get into the knows and hows of it before I pull the plug. I already have a guy that seems to be interested to swap his atv with one of my boats.
I know I can google for atv forums, but what I really want is reference from users that actually goes to those forums so I can cut down spending time in sites that are not too productive.
I want to learn how to put a value in an ATV, understand how to repairs them (could not be to much different than a ob) and such...

Thanks!!!

Re: 4 Wheeler forum similar to Iboats?

http://www.nyrocatv.com/forum.cgi Pretty decent forum with many adults ;)

What kind of ATV? I can tell you my opinions based on previously working at a dealership. I own 2 late model Suzuki's and swear by them. Honda is good..... Kawi's are okay, Yamahas have a few problems and issues as do Arctic Cat (bad bad frames) and Polaris.... stay away from 2 stroke Polaris.

Most 400cc and under are air/oil cooled and the larger are liquid cooled. I have 4x4's that are utility based...... you might want to avoid the 4x2 which are sport based.

I am going to slide this over to non boating tech ;)

Re: 4 Wheeler forum similar to Iboats?

It is a suzuki 400 4x4 with differential and super low. He believes it is early 90s but he is not sure. He says it runs then it dies, like a carburetor problem. He is asking 1k for it or a trade.
How hard is to get parts for these things? Which atvs are the johnson/evinrude of the group and which are the "force" (sorry force guys, ;))

Not coming up, must be the proxy at work... I cant tell what ****s means. Im sure you are not saying anything wrong, can you spell it differently? You think that is worth 1k? My friend says it should be more like $800. How hard is to get parts? I know getting parts for my evinrude 1974 and mercury 1968 is not hard, wonder if it is hard for these vehicles.... I can fix almost anything, but I need parts... LOL!

Re: 4 Wheeler forum similar to Iboats?

Shift on the fuel tank and probably about a 280 cc. The "force" catagory would be the old 2 stroke polaris (yuck) or any knock off brand. Stay away from older Yamahas too weak swing arms. Arctic cat had and still has week frames. Older kawasakis had valve problems. Honda and suzuki are the leaders. A suzuki that runs in good condition 4 x 4 like the one in the pictures would bring 750-1000..... I can see it needs tires. They are not maintenence free but they will darn near climb walls.

Parts are not hard to get

The problem areas are the shift linkages on the older suzuki's and make sure you have good front and rear brakes

The ones covered in mud are my friends just like the machine in your pictures. The cleaner pair are my 500 and 700 suzukis.

Re: 4 Wheeler forum similar to Iboats?

no itf its suzuki. not sure if suzuki made any other atvs but my looks almost exactly like that its 250cc. ya thats was really good machine. suzuki made it for a while. i got a 1998 so urs is a bit older. great engine runs great. change oil once a year.

but again just like an outboard check compression spark. i got 120psi on mine so if i did a dcarb would expect 130+. and spark

try out the choke to get it running. my motor is made not to use the choke for cold start only like in snowing weather.

only problem i have is that it takes forever to warm up. but its ok quiet dont vibrate. i like it better then the rest of the mfgers

Re: 4 Wheeler forum similar to Iboats?

Tires are no joke I run ITP Mud Lites on the red one and they were 280 for the 4 + mounting  Carb kit will run you about $50 and get brakes just to be safe.

Yup if thats the 400 quadrunner then it is oil/air cooled. It has an oil cooler.

The rear rack is an easy fix with a welder. As far as the seat..... just get it recovered and maybe re-foamed.

Most of the parts are available aftermarket.

Re: 4 Wheeler forum similar to Iboats?

It's a Suzuki King Quad
They're kinda neat because of the diff lock and super low, you may not get there fast, but it'll climb/pull about anything.

Parts are easy to get, http://www.bikebandit.com is a good place to look. Not always the cheapest, but not too bad either, and the parts diagrams are great.

I'll guess that "runs then dies" means a carb cleaning, probably the float needle is stuck nearly closed, and won't let fuel in fast enough to keep it running.

If it was running good, I think it'd be worth $1,000. In my experience, any full size quad that runs rarely drops much below that, unless it's super rough condition.

Nyroc,ATVquadsquad and ATVfrontier are the 3 I get my info from. If I could get my hands on an old polaris 400 2 stroke 4x4 I'd get it right now. They build a 100 hp kit for that motor complete for $1000.WOOHOO! Pass the 800 Bombs and the thunder cat like there standin still! :D

I'm not looking for a speed atv. This is for hunting... Getting to a remote stand, help with food plots, maintenance, retrieve deer and such. Maybe a bit of fun in the mud also.

A suzuki 4x4 will be perfect for you then. I tend to avoid the mud fun since I am so anal about keeping mine in great shape. I have 2500 lb warn winches on mine which is darn near req'd around here and I do wear a helmet.

Re: 4 Wheeler forum similar to Iboats?

The only thing with quads like any toy is if you can repair it yourself your way ahead of the game. When I got mine I was careful,in the beginning,to be cautious about the trails and the mud and other things but after riding with a few people that use them almost daily I now use mine to it's full potential, or should I say my limits. There's not much that can compare to a full days riding through all kinds of terrain and conditions with great friends and a good winch. lol. Sure it costs a few more bucks to keep it going but my enjoyment of the thing has gone up dramatically. It still amazes what they can do and go through. I get my parts off the net at half the price they are in Canada and those 3 sites give me all the info I need to keep it running right. I just wish I would have found them before my purchase. Sorry guys I logged in oops! pc and never noticed. I was just going to pm him and ask why he wasn't on the lake and realized it was me.haha NoKlu
