Here goes my first attempt at an outboard rebuild. I have experience with automotive engines so this will be interesting to say the least. Im waiting on the omc service manual and then I will get started.

I have twin outboards on this boat and if it werent for this I would have ran this motor until it blew. I noticed that this motor running had a miss at idle speed and when I checked the compression the second piston down on the starbord bank ,there was no compression, on the port side there was only about 15psi on the top piston. I guess the motor was just inbalance enough to let the motor run with minimal shakeing and I almost went back offshore.

When I took the heads off the pistons looked galded and the cylinders were scratched up pretty good. Im going to send the motor off and have it checked and bored hopefully, if I can find someone to do it. I found a rebuild kit on ebay for $780 Tristate Marine. Anyone had any experience with them?

Ill take all advice given, as i will be sure to need it. Thanks for your imput

Oh by the way the motor looks to have run lean for some reason. The boat has two seperate oil resivors one for each motor and one is half empty and other is almost full (bad Motor)? Since then , I have unhooked the Vro and am now premixing, on both motors.

Thanks again I will try to keep all updated with pics. Thanks Kevin

you still haven't uncovered the actual reason for it to fail though,
if theres a clogged carb then pre-mixing won't fix it.
the vro gets the blame when its usually not the fault.

how do the carb internals look, any junk in the jets?
what about fuel lines and filters?
you can do a lot before the manual gets there.

Yea the fuel line from the primer bulb to the motor looks really bad cracked, it might be possible for some water to enter if the water comes over the transom. Ill check into it some more.
I havent taken the carbs off yet as I was kind of waiting on the manual to aid in the dissasimbley. Thanks for the reply and you are right the vro very well might not be the problem, I was just going to premix after the rebuild for my peice of mind as it would be one less thing to go wrong.

Thanks again Kevin
