I have a few questions about a boat that I just aquired. It is a 1974 Dor-Ray cabin boat. It has a Mercruiser 165 on it. It is missing the outdrive and I cannot find exactly which model outdrive it takes. The guy I got it off of said it was an Alpha 1, but from what I have gathered The alpha series did not come into use until the 80's. Also what all model outdrives would work on it? Would the ratio matter? It is a 20 footer and is fairly heavy. I got the boat for free, but it does need some plywood, paint and an outdrive, but the hull is in excellent shape. Also if anyone has any information on Dor-Ray I would appreciate it. :D

Thanks,

Chuck

A pic of the stern would be useful
If it`s the GM in-line 6 cyl. any Series`1, R,MR, Alpha1 will fit.The input shaft length may have to be changed to a short one. The ratio should be 1.65 to 1

Yes, it is an in line 6 cylinder GM 250 engine. Here are pics of the boat. I decided to completely redo the boat next spring.

Re: 1974 Mercruiser Outdrive type

I picked up a blown out outdrive for $45. I figured it was a start. I am trying to get the model of it. The serial number is 6095506. Any help would be appreciated. The 2 gears in the bottom half are chewed up bad. the one coming off the drive shaft and the one clean in the back. My boat originally had a 1.65 ratio in it. Can I use a different ratio?

Thanks,

Chuck

you can but engine will either rev to high or to low matter which way you go.
buying a tore up outdrive is a waste of money, gears are 400.00 on up.

you can get a used one on ebay, craigslist or sei drive or by a parts boat.
