Hi there,
I took my 1969 ( 9.5 ) Johnson motor for a spin this weekend and the gear kept jumping into neutral when going forward at mid way speed. Would anyone know why and how I can get this fix. I just bought the boat & motor so I'm learning about the outdoors boating adventures.

Does it slip into neutral or go in with a bang like you hit something?

That engine was well known for broken motor mount's. That will cause the problem you discribe. With the engine clamped to a solid surface, such as the boat. Pull, and push the engine forward, and back, do the same side to side. See how much free motion you have.

When I'm going slow there is no problem but once I start to go a bit fast it just slip into neutral ( no bang ) . It just sound loud due to the gear kickin into neutral. I have to reduce the speed and put it back into forward.I will try to see how much motion I get once I pull/push and move it side to side.
when I was in the water the side to side motion felt good. I'll get back to you
once I do the push & pull.

How firm is the shifter engagement?

On one of my motors the shifter handle was loose to the point where it only about half engaged in forward, I never ran it on the water before correcting the issue but it should be a good solid click or clunk when it locks in.

Bear in mind that the tilt lock mechanism on the 9.5 is connected to the shifter handle so if something is causing binding there it could be 'pulling' it out of gear or not allowing it to fully engage in forward gear.

If my memory is working correctly I think the shift rod in the lower unit moves up when forward gear is engaged, if someone did a water pump job and didn't align the shift coupler correctly I could see a situation where it may only half engage in forward and then pop out.

As Nobody said, not having the coupler reconnected properly can cause the exact problem that you are experiencing. It is quite common because the screw was not removed disconnecting the gearcase, so that when putting the case back together the screw does not fit into the beveled part of the rod to align it properly.

Question has to be, does it "snap" into gear with a definate feel to it? If it does, the linkage and everything else is telling the parts in the lower unit gearcase what to do. The detent that provides the snap feel is in the gearcase, and that is what retains it in gear once you put it there.

So.o.o.o., what I am getting at is that your clutch dog and forward gear are probably worn out. On motors with the detent somewhere else, a worn clutch dog will often come out of gear and immediatly slam back into gear with a bang. Not necessarily so with the 9.5. On the 9.5, the worn dog slides on the shaft and kicks the detent to the neutral position, where it stays till you shift it back to forward.
