hi guys...

350 chevy. the motor i have is an older block casting.

i purchased a different 350 motor for parts. it has a hi rise intake.
this hi rise has other benifits over my current manifold.

i would like to bolt on the hi rise, however the center two bolts on the intake are at a different angle than the rest. this means that the hi-rise wont properly bolt down in the center of the m manifold.

can i just reem out the holes on the manifold? any one done it before?
it seems simple and i cant see any other reasons why not

thanks

Ayuh,.... As usual,.. You've already Got the answers Buddy,...;)

You're mixin',+ matching older with the mid-term stuff...
It's a pretty common work-around on that vintage swap,...
It's the later Vortec stuff that changed Too much to adapt...(8 intake bolts Vs. 12)
They make some Washers that help adapt to the change of angle at the bolts shoulder,...
You might wanta goolge a few guesses for 'em...

I stopped by your thread, I think last night,...
Glad to see yer gettin' Close to burnin' some Fuel,..... :)

Re: intake manifold questions.

thank you my friend.....knew i could count on you.

i hate the idea of mix and match....but i also got a 650 double pumper carb with the motor and the butterflies wont open on my existing manifold.

the motor is just getting put togeather then ill rig it.
im hoping to see the water soon, but with all the coustomers boats i can only get an hour or two working on the boat every other day !

ok....illl let you know how it went!

cheers

Re: intake manifold questions.

There is one guy on here that has bolted a 1987-1994 intake with the 72 degree bolts to a 1986 and older block with good success.
My father and I tried it 10 years ago, and could not stop the vacuum leaks. Finally went out and spent the $120 on the right intake manifold from Edelbrock, and the motor ran perfectly. I suggest you do the same. Or, use the heads from the newer engine on the older block, too.

Re: intake manifold questions.

We were going to grind the surface where the bolts contact the manifold flat then ream the holes to the proper angle. I will check to see if they have any washers to fit the manifold so there will be less grinding. If we get any leakage we will have to get an adapter plate to run the Holley on the stock intake. I can't see any reason it wont work as long as we don't ream the holes to large.

Re: intake manifold questions.

The hole is already too large, that's the problem. When you change to the more "upright" angle, you lose clamping force on the outer half of the existing hole. Sure, you can get washers and bushings and all kinds of whatnots.
But why wouldn't you spend the $130 it takes to get the correct manifold? In boating dollars, that's nothing!

In Canada a $130 manifold is $300.

Re: intake manifold questions.

this swap depends on how good you are at adapting. i've seen some work, most not. that hi-rise might bring a few bucks on craigslist or what not, which would lessen the dent in your wallet, and the headache in yer dome.

Re: intake manifold questions.

You might be able to get an adapter plate to fit between the Holley and your existing manifold.

Re: intake manifold questions.

We have been trying to sell a few parts to get things for the ray but so far we have had no luck with engine parts. Things are so cheap at pick your part it's hard to sell anything in a small city like this. The gains we will get from this high rise manifold make it too good not to try and in the end we still have the original manifold. If there is no adapter plate he still has the original carb as well. Careful reaming of the hole so it will only be longer at the top and not at the bottom so with a thick washer to spread the load and lots of gasket glue we are going to give it a whirl. If we get leaks it won't take long to figure it out and only a couple of hours to swap it out. oops bought a blown engine to get all the marine parts from it but so far not too much seems to fit. The distributor and the alternator so far are the only things that will bolt on so it's been slow going to get this engine together and money is tight.

extreme careful reaming of the holes. i've been on both ends, success and failure. little by little, ream, fit, ream, fit. good luck guys.
