I-6 vs V-6

Can anyone tell me if a lower unit from an inline 6 1983 150hp will fit on a V-6 1989 150 (both mercs)? The lower unit from the inline is just a spare I had from a previous boat and I'm trying to resolve a slipping issue with my XR-4. If the driveshaft is the only issue, will they interchange?

Thanks

Inline and V6 won't interchange, the V6 gearcase is much longer, aft of the water pump............ed

Re: I-6 vs V-6

Wolf, There is no such thing as a 1983 inline 6 150HP Merc. The last 150HP Merc inline six was made in 1977. I presume you mean a 1983 115HP inline six?

BTW, I have been told that the inline six gearcase will fit the V6, if you remove the front mounting stud and elongate the middle mounting holes in the gearcase. The driveshaft supposedly fits fine.

I have been too lazy to try it, since my v6 gearcase works fine.

Re: I-6 vs V-6

Wolf,
There's a coupla of other gotchas in putting an inline gearcase on a V6. It's a smaller weaker gearcase, so it really isn't worth the effort.

The larger 4 3/4 inch gearcase will bolt right up to the XR4. It changes prop shaft height slightly, so engine mounting or jackplate setting may need to be changed.

I fail to see how changing the gearcase will affect slippage. There's nothing in a gearcase that can slip without totally self destructing. Prop slip is a function of prop design and exhaust flow through or around it.

hope it helps
John
