First off - I am a novice on outboard motors, but do know cars well. This motor had a recent rebuild before I bought it. It seemed to be degrading in the power after a couple of hours of running. #1 cyl was not firing. I had to adjust the points and tighten up the condensor as it was loose as well. After that I had it running at the dock and it started coughing a bit and then stalled. Various bolt on parts where loose so I tightend everything up and checked all the vacume lines. I found it sheared a flywheel key. I think I had under torqued the nut. I replaced the key - double checked the points and torqued the flywheel nut to 95.
After a bit of cranking it made just a couple of pops and I found that the timing plate was stuck all the way advanced and would not return unless I manually moved it. It looks like the timing advance limit screw adjustment was way loose. I tightened it down so it would not advance past about 35 degrees. It also seems as I manually rotate the flywheel with the plugs out it does not spark every rotation of the flywheel.
I am not really sure where to start now and also wondered how I would set the timing just to get it in the ball park?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Vern
