Engine Boggs under hard acceleration

Hey, this is my first post on this site about my first boat I have ever owned so please bare with me.

The boat is a 1989 bayliner capri with an i/o 2.3L omc.

The problem I am having is if I try and gun it the engine dies. As if it is possibly being flooded. If I really baby the throttle I can eventually get enough rpm's to plane.

While accelerating if I try to accelerate slightly too quickly the rpm's drop rapidly and I have to ease off on the throttle quickly to prevent the engine from dieing.

Even when I do baby the throttle there is a delay in the rpms increasing by a couple of seconds.

Could this be a dirty carb? Bad throttle cable position? It does have old gas in it but when it does finally get enough rpm's to plane it runs fine.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined and I am going to start tinkering with it tomorrow.

Any tips on where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the long post!

Thanks,
Luke

My bet is lack of fuel.

When was the last full tuneup?

Your accellerater pump in the carb is bad. to test this, remove the spark arrestor, open the choke and manually operate the throttle. You should see a strong jet of fuel being shot down the throat of the carb. If you dont see the fuel spraying, the accelerator pump ain't working

I have no idea when the last full tune up was performed. I bought the boat off of my uncle. He changed oil on the stern drive and the engine once a year. The boat has low hours on it.

I will test the accelerator pump as stated and give the engine a once over and see if anything needs replacing like plugs wires so on....

Thanks!

I was having the same problem. I did a complete tune up and still had the same problem. Yesterday I found that it was a switch on my shift converter causing it. I unplugged the switch and Boom Goes the dynamite. It ran great all day. Mine is a 1985 sea ray with an omc 5.7. Good luck.

You may also take a look at the vacum advance, and or the mechanical advance in the dist.

also, as you stated there is bad gas, which ain't good. a fresh tank of good gas may help.
