Engine S# 4012035077. I need to replace pickup coil in the distributor. According to my Clymer manual this can be done without removing the distributor. I have used all my ZEN trying to figure how to do it and I can't. In the replacement coil package there is information that the distributor has to be removed. Please, advice.

the distributor does have to be removed to replace the PICKUP COIL. the ignition module and ignition coil can be replaced without removing dist. the dist. shaft goes straight thru the pickup coil, so removal and disassembly of dist. is required. have you isolated the pickup coil as the problem, or taking a shot in the dark?

Thank you.
I have measured resistance on the pick-up coil and seem to be shorted.
Do I need to adjust timing after this procedure assuming the I will keep things oriented the way they are? My local shop is backed up for a couple of weeks and I do not want to create more problems...

absolutely! anytime dist. is messed with, it needs to be re-timed.

Re: Volvo Penta 4.3 GI P/U Coil replacement

After replacing p/u coil and ignition module the engine starts fine. I have tried to adjust the timing and I have two problems - first, when I tried to plug in the Volvo timing gizmo, the engine shuts down and would not start up. Second problem - I do not have timing scale on my harmonic dumper or the engine block, just single marks. I have compared the timing to my other engine and seems to be similar but as I said there is no scale. Please, advice.

Read this about setting the timing.

An advance timing light cures the problem of no marks. There are also timing tapes with degrees marked that you glue onto your harmonic balancer. Get one for your balancers diameter.
