Hello,
I have a 1995 Evinrude 88hp SPL. It starts at the house and initially in the river. I run it up river for about 30 minutes or so and turn it off to do some fishing. When we are ready to move to a new location. The motor barely turns over with no fire. It is as if the battery is low on charge but it is not. I also let it run at the house for about 30 minutes and cut it off and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Same results as if it was in the river. I have 2 new batteries and I cleaned all connections throughly. I am suspecting a bad starter. This is driving me nuts and the wife is not happy returning to the boat ramp on a trolling motor. I love to hear anyones ideas on this. Thank you in advance.

By the way, the fuel line is new and the gas is fresh. The primer bulp stiffens up too. The votages seem correct as well.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Is the starter disengaging after you start it?

It disengages most of the time, but sometimes it does not.

Next time you have the problem I would feel the starter to see if its hot. I would also check the load on the battery when starting. I'm kinda grabbing at straws here but I have seen this type of thing on cars. When the starters are going bad they pull a pretty big load, even more so if they get hot.

try swappin your car battery in when it won't turn the engine over,

if the fresh battery can't do it, its probably the starter.

Re: Runs for 30 minutes and no restart

Thank you both for your input. The starter is drawing down to 9 volts while trying to start the engine, and is killing the battery very quickly. Would you recommend rebuilding it myself, or but a new one?
