Hi guys,
My first post...
I just bought a Mercury 850 for ?220 - which I thought was a bargain as it included controls, 2 propellers and a fuel tank.
But I've been looking at the serial numbers on various websites like www.crowleymarine.com/parts.cfm. My serial number is 8475339 I think (this is printed on the main metal casing of the actual engine) .
But the catalogues all list for Mercury 850 (85hp, 4 cylinder so I'm told):
8043775 - 8050199;
9011604 - 9110013
So I completely miss both ranges! I've looked through loads of charts trying to find a starting range near mine but can't even find anything in the 8xxxxxx range... I and so probably the engine am from the UK, if that makes any difference.
Does anyone know for sure what this engine actually is and its year? Perhaps it's something special? I'm already quite chuffed it is so high up the serial number range, as these 850 serials did start at 3xxxxxx! So I assume that it was one of the newer ones, though quite when this was I have no idea...
Also, the engine does not appear to have a starter solenoid even though the wiring diagram (at: http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/1966ona/30.gif) indicates it should - do I need a Mercury solenoid or can I use any - or can I even get away with wiring it direct to the battery with a button switch in the circuit?
And does anyone know roughly how much this engine is worth?
Thanks a lot in advance, I'm looking forward to finding out lots here and getting my first boat on the water (it's to go on a 13.5ft bright yellow fibreglass speedboat - hopefully 85hp isn't too OTT and it won't just tip/sink my boat straight away!)
David
