5hp Sears tune-up?

So, I recently got a sears 5hp (1969 model 217.59672) at a rummage sale for very cheap.
It runs pretty well once it starts, but doesn't start very well. I seem to have to pull a few times with in the stop position and then try starting it with the throttle lever in the start postion. And then it takes many tries to get it going.

It also will only run with the chock almost all the way out.

So, I was thinking cleaning the carb and a new plug might help. Does that sound right?

I am also very new to doing any mechanical repairs, so I'm not sure how to clean the carb, but I bet I can find some instructions here somewhere.

I think that is a 70 no matter they are all very similar.
It is an aircooled Tecumseh power head with a water cooled exhaust leg.
There is a pump and water should mist out the relief holes in the leg.
Not surprised it is difficult to start they often are even when set up right.
You may find a service manual covering many brands at the library.
Normal to need a careful cleaning of the carb/fuel system on any outboards that have sat for extended periods.
Basically disassemble the carb be sure all passages and jets are clear.
go through from tank to carb. These motors are marginal performers try to get it done with a minimul investment in time and money.
Sell it and put the money toward a 3,4,5,5.5 or 6 hp Evinrude or Johnson
from 52-79.

Re: 5hp Sears tune-up?

Thanks for the tips.
It was very cheap, so if I get it goin' it's worth it.

The exhaust does spit water, so the water cooling is working.

I'll try cleaning the carb and fuel lines, hopefully that'll get it going. But, it sounds like it's not a great motor anyway. But for the price I couldn't go wrong.

Oh yeah, the chart that told me it was a '69 also said I should mix 16:1. Does that sound right if it's a '70, or would 24:1 be more appropriate?

I have a 3.5hp version of the same motor. It starts and runs very easily, but it is loud and shakes at lower RPM. I keep telling myself to sell it, but haven't yet. I actually have better 5.5hp and 7.5hp motors, but this one is so light and easy to pull from the garage to the boat, I keep using it.

I am new to boat motors but have been getting my project Eska to start
quickly with a shot of starter spray. Now if it would only keep going.
Must be a plug up carb.
