I have tried to research the changing of a bad starter drive gear (not the whole starter.). Can it be done? I have found starters for my motor E28ESLCCR 28hp they are listed as 11 tooth, my starter is 9 tooth. Is my motor odd? I have tried to find a 9 tooth drive gear but have not had any luck yet. The starter motor is fine the drive gear is in need of change ( a bit worn out). Can this change be made with the starter in place or does it need to be removed from the motor. I have tried to remove the nut on the drive gear but the shaft spins. Any one have a tip for me? Is their a site that will give a blown apart veiw of where the bolts hold the starter brackets to the motor? Thanks to all that respond.

I have the same problem, when the motor would start the starter would go back down an stick I would have to free it up with channel locks .My local boat mech. said spray the shaft with Blaster an put 3 in 1 oil on it ever now an then. You can order the parts you need off of Iboats an get them in 3 or 4 days via upsI have'nt had any more trouble with it Good luck
