I have a 1989 sea nymph fish and ski with a 89 Johnson VRO 70 hp outboard. i took the ignition apart today and tried putting it back together. I lost all power to everything in my boat now. I can not find the schematics to rewire the ignition. This is what i have for wires:

2 Solid Red
1 Yellow w/ red stripe ( i think thats the starter)
4 solid purple
4 solid black
1 red w/ purple stripe.

Can someone please help??? Why would i lose power to everything else in my boat (trim, fishfinder, pumps ect...)

thanks for any info

Thanks, i've seen that diagram. The only problem is the wires i have do not match whats on the chart. I dont have a violet with white stripe or black with yellow stripe. Im a woodworker not a boat mechanic so this stuff is all Greek to me.

Re: Please help with ignition!!

is this switch in a omc remote or is it a custom type control?

is the wire harness still concealed in the factory sleeve or has it been rewired?

Everything looks factory. The harnesses look like they never been touched. The ignition had a black coating over the end of the wires, which looked very factory to me. Could all the purple wires be for the different gauges? With the ignition not hooked up that would kill the power to everything?

Re: Please help with ignition!!

i bought a bass boat for $400 last year and when i opened the rear hatch every, and i mean every, wire was cut............... and it had been rewired a few times so most of the wires where a combination of orange red and black

its painstakingly slow but you can get a multi-meter and find where every wire goes ............... of course you will need to unhook the battery so you can run resitance/ohms tests to help identify the wires at the other end......... if you can get someone to help hold the wires on either end it would help a bunch......also make sure you write it down using an INK PEN . yes i did it the first time with pencil

I am so bad with electrical. how do i test them? They are hooked to something. I have a multimeter but i dont know what the resistance should be.

Would the radio, pumps, gages, and any other accessory all get hooked up to the A or I?

Re: Please help with ignition!!

i have seen one thread a guy posted a while back and he was switching out harnesses and had everything unhooked

hopefully you only have the ignition switch undone..... at least from what ive read.

just start with the toggle switches and see what in the boat still works.... if nothing works you will need to find the hot wire that feeds them and these will be your accessory wiring..... also make sure if they grounded them inside the box or at the battery.

then you can move to the choke, ign solenoid, etc.............like i said its a pain and its easier to work backwards.......... like the starter solenoid for instance: put one lead on the starter solenoid wire and start touching the other lead to wires until you get a reading. as long as you are running resistance checks and have the battery unhooked you cannot hurt anything by touching the wrong wires.

Re: Please help with ignition!!

on my boat all of my accessories are wired into a fuse box that is again fused at the battery............ no key needed for anything except to start it.

the only problem is if you leave it in a slip and people play with your stuff and run down the batteries .............. or your kids turn stuff on and leave it......... i have to admit i have driven all the way home with the gauge lights on and a few times with the fishfinder on

Re: Please help with ignition!!

The ignition wiring cannot handle accessories; it is sufficient for engine needs and gauges.
