Hi, I'm new to this forum and have read alot of great info from it. My trouble is that I just finished rebuilding the bottom end on me merc 9.8 1970, and I do not have reverse gear. I Just purchased this motor and the needle bearings were destoyed. They were all replace for new, everything was carefully placed back where i found it. Now, it is still the same thing, no reverse. Forward and neutral are perfect but no reverse. I'm now wondering if i should remove the 5 shimes that i installed (that were originaly there) just before the prop shaft bearing carrier. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am thinking you have a plastic reverse lock shaft in your motor.
They would bind up and prevent your motor from going into reverse.
With the motor off the boat lying on its back look between the stern clamps and check to see if it is plastic or metal. If plastic try shifting the engine into reverse. While doing that watch where the shaft enters the lower unit housing
to see if you can determin if it is binding in the reverse lock slot. If it is metal you probably have a different problem.

I just checked and its is indeed metal. The lever is moving in both directions equally with no binding. I did notice running in the barrel, prop does turn in reverse but it doesn't bite any water if i give it a bit of gas. Its almost as if it needs to engage a little more. I did put all the shims back and wonder if maybe i should remove a few.....Any ideas at all would be great !

Hi,

Glad it was simple.
Make sure that lock ring it tight.
We used to use the Merc tool to get it tight by
hand then give it a wack or two with a hammer
to make sure it stayed in place.
