bad lower unit

Ok here is the usual question, i could not find my answer on old posts so here it goes. I have a 74 evinrude 25 long shaft. If i find a compatible yearmodel but in short shaft, i aleady know i use my water tube extension, driveshart and so on, my real question is the shifter? Dose is easily remove from the unit if i find a short shaft replacement or will i need to have it cut and a 5'' peice welded in?

Also what year and HP ranges will fit this motor? i found one off a 1957, but i assume this one will not fit.

You could weld it but it'd be a lot easier remove the long one and put it in the new LU.

how do you remove the shift shaft from the gearcase? i know how to do everything else i actually have the unit dropped from the motor awaiting a donor.

if you do have to remove it measure it down to the last millimeter............ that way you save a lot of time during re-assembly.

sorry im no help with removal...... ive never had to work on one ... it looks like a pain though.

Is the lower unit spilt on that model or not? If split, open it up and it's easy. If not you have to pull the prop shaft... I have not done that method though. split LU's are very easy to work with.

I'm lost on what your doing. Do you need a standard shift connector, or the 5"? If you are going from long to short, you need a standard connector.

outbord on the boat is a long shaft, possible replacement in a short. I will need to swap the replacement to fit the longshaft midsection on my boat. so i will be going from a short shaft foot to a long shaft foot.

I believe the shift rods are the same length on long or short shaft. The difference is the brass shift rod coupler. A short shaft coupler is about an inch long while the long shaft coupler is about 6 inches long.
