Mercruiser 470 and keeping it in time.

Hello,

I recently did a tune-up on my '84 470(alpha 1). The tune-up consisted of plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and a coil. The boat is a 1984 Chapparal 187. It runs great when it is in time, but it seems to "jump" time after turning it off the first time after timing it. Anyone have any ideas on why the motor won't stay "in time"?

Thanks,

Lee

How could I have forgotten. The problem I have, is when I time it, and tighten the the distributor down, it seems to always want to move.

No, I time the engine, and then tighten the distributor. It runs great until I turn it off, and then the next time I start it up, it is hard to start, and is out of the time.

Can you explain what you are talking about the "advance springs and weights"?

I have the manuals on the engine and outdrive, but can you explain what all is involved with changed the timing chain?

Anyone else have any ideas? Possible distributor issue, not staying tight? Anyway to check the timing chain for play?
