A youth group was visiting a local lake today (Browns lake in Racine county WI)
They jumped off the boat to go swimming, One young boy got tangled up in the weeds and was going under. The camp counsler went in after him but struggled and had to be rescued. It has been 2 hours now and no sign of the young boy. Please pray for the family.

Sad about the kid who couldn't swim.

The story just doesn't make sense.. beyond someone drowning in killer weeds.. the boat didn't have a throwable? The water couldn't have been too deep, considering it had weeds growing, either. The deepest weeds I have seen were in less than 5 feet of water, including lilly pads. Was the counseler a midget?

Does anyone have a link to a news story about it for mote information?

Same thing happened here on Sunday. Three young guys went out on a small boat at a small lake outside of town.(Puslinch Lake) They went swimming and one apparently got caught up in weeds and didn't come up. They recovered his body next morning. Absolutely tragic.

For those of us who so love the water, those stories are beyond belief....such a shame and our heartfelt sympathy to the families...

Has anyone ever experienced something like this but got free to tell about it. I just can't imagine the strong enough to hold me under killer weeds.

I've seen tops of weeds in 35' of water, so yes they can grow anywhere.

Very tragic story and my thoughts are with the family.

UPDATE: Missing boy's aunt: 'We're leaving it in the Lord's hands'
By Journal Times staff
Wednesday, Jul. 15, 2009, 3:11 pm

Family members of Darius Nelson, 14, of Milwaukee, are waiting on the shore of Browns Lake while the search continues for the teenage boy.

"We're leaving it in the Lord's hands," said Debra Nelson, the boy's aunt. "He's going to come up."

Darius's mother and father are not at the scene because it's too "heartbreaking" for them to be there, she said. Debra Nelson and a cousin were there yesterday and plan to remain there for the rest of the search today.

Officials suspend divers' search due to wind, currents

The divers' search for a 14-year-old boy who went missing in Browns Lake yesterday was suspended at 3 p.m. this afternoon due to strong winds and currents. The Department of Natural Resources and the Town of Burlington Water Patrol are continuing surface searches until dark tonight for Darius Nelson, a 14-year-old Milwaukee boy who drowned yesterday.

They plan to resume searching tomorrow morning.

Officials re-targeted their search area this morning because they found out late last night that the boat had drifted about ? of a mile from where the boy had possibly drowned.

"From what I understand, the children were swimming in the water not too far from the boat, but they were unable to reach him," said Chief Bill Bouma of the South Shore Fire Department and chairman of the Racine County Dive Team.

Officials on the scene said the boy is presumed dead.

Locals offer support to family of drowning victim

TOWN OF BURLINGTON ? Darius Nelson had just joined the choir last week at Redemption Fellowship Church in Milwaukee, where he and his family were active members. He was excited about joining, family said.
It?s just one of the things Jeni Diehl learned about the 14-year-old Milwaukee boy who drowned in Brown?s Lake Tuesday.
Diehl owns a concession stand in Fischer Park, where Nelson?s family waited throughout the day Wednesday as rescue crews searched the lake for the young man?s body.
Diehl and several local businesses provided food and shelter to about 10 family members who traveled to Burlington Tuesday when they learned Darius had gone missing in the lake.
Diehl, who is director of hospitality and care ministry at Riverwood Community Church in Burlington, said she e-mailed her congregation asking them to pray for Darius? family.
?We?re all God?s children and Darius is somebody?s son and he?s out there somewhere and we?re doing what we can to support the family,? Diehl said Wednesday.
Family members left the park around 4 p.m. Wednesday not long after county rescue crews called off the search because of weather conditions. Diehl said she expected the family to return Thursday.

Weeds can make swimming very difficult. I swam into a near shore weed patch and the resistance and sense that you're being dragged down is surprising. I'm an experienced swimmer and realised that all I had to do was remain calm and slowly swim out of them, but an inexperinced kid could easily panic and drown. There was an incident on the Savanah river a few months ago where a teenager got caught in weeds and had to be saved by friend in a kayak.

Very unfortunate, the sheriff's dept. recovered the boys body this afternoon.

The paper reports that he jumped off the boat he was on into deep water even tho he did not know how to swim, got caught up wanting to have fun and lost his life. R.I.P.
