I have a 1990 bayliner with a mercrusier 3.0 inboard, like always I was checking things getting it ready for the 4th of july weekend, I hooked up the garden hose to the lower unit, and started it up, started right up, like always, went in the house to get something to drink, while it warmed up, came ,back and removed the engine cover , and thats when I noticed water leaking from both sides of the manifold on the second bolt from the front of the engine, engine still running great, no misses or skips, 165 normal temp, so I shut it down and pulled out the dipstick to check the oil, and thats when I really went crazy, the oil looked like coffee, with a lot of creamer in it, PLEASE HELP, THANKS.:(:(:(

I would suggest you remove and inspect your spark plugs for signs of water.

When an exhaust manifold lets go, or fails it will allow water to enter into the combustion chambers of one or more cylinders.

The exhaust manifold and mixing elbow are cast iron and fail at about 10 years of service.

Check for water and let us know.

Good luck

Re: mercrusier 3.0 water in oil.

i have an 87 capri 2.3 ford omc, i prepped my boat as you did for the 4th weekend, no probs., got to the lake, run for about 20 minutes, daughter says dad your engine is smoking! i shut her down and inspected, water was gushing out of my manifold riser, checked oil, no water in oil, that was a good sign!!!! thinking the gasket blew out, i limped her back to shore, on further investigation i noticed two bolt had snapped on the riser! (the riser bolts to the top of the back of the manifold and connect to a rubber boot for exhaust) oh by the way, im also a newbie at boating, this my first boat. anyways, looked like an easy fix though my weekend was ruined, i trailerd boat 200 miles to enjoy the weekend. got home, started taking apart and snapped another bolt! got it all apart, soaked in muratic acid to clean tapped new holes started scraping old gasket off and noticed the exhaust ports were starting to corrode in the middle of the manifold and the riser, im wondering if yours had corrodid to the point that its letting water inthrough you ports?? i may be out of a manifold and riser myself, very expensive for a FORD omc! and rare. please post on how it turns out!

Hammerfist - your manifold is shot if it's rusted through. They're not repairable at that point.

the engine runs great, I can see the crack underneath the carb, water is in the oil, everyone is telling me cracked block, because if the water was getting on top of the piston , it should be skipping , right!, alot of searching the internet people are saying its the manifold / riser rusted out, and or cracked, how is water getting in the oil, without the block being cracked, I do not understand, PLEASE HELP, i just had all the upholstery done $1300.00, and now this , can someone give me a positive direction, please! thank all of you for your replies.

Well, I'll be as postive as I can.
If the crack in the manifold isn't too bad and it isn't rusted through one can find a shop to braze it up and hope for the best. Or find a replacement- they are't that costly. My 3L ran ( not great,) with a crack in the exhaust side and water in the cylinders found during a compression test.(how's your's BTW?) My manifold gasket was bad too -
Tons of water in the oil after 6 hr run...
Plug your block, pressurize it and see if you got a leak. I have been advised to do the same and have not found a leak in the block from the water jacket to the lubrication side.
No harm done by lookin', hey? What's to lose at this point? Good luck:)
