1977 OMC lower unit removal

I need to tear apart the foot of my lower unit to see what the "popping out of forward" / "no forward" issue is. The manual says to remove the whole sterndrive, but my question is can I just unbolt the lower unit?

Yes, I think you can, but you'll have to work somewhat upsidedown. Besides its easy to get the whole leg off.

What is needed to remove the whole thing? Also, how heavy is it?

Do you have a manual? On mine, its a Stringer 800 I think, and its only a few bolts to take it off. Its pretty straight forward, hard to explain, if yours is the same, its were the leg pivots, you just take off the mounts there.
