I have an 88 Bayliner with a 5.7 liter and a cobra outdrive. Cruising at about 2500 rmp's the engine suddenlly stopped and a very horrible banging noise started. It sounded like pipes banging around in the rear of the engine compartment. I removed the outdrive from the boat and started the boat for 5 sec's and the noise was still there . Also when I looked into the hole in the outside of the boat where the outdrive mounts up, I saw something that looked like a washer that was shredded up. It wasn't the gimble bearing. It looked as if the it would have lined up with the universals by the spline shaft of the outdrive. Could somebody help me , somebody said It could be somekind of a coupler in the engine, and it doesn't sound like a rod , it's a different noise. Also, the day before I hit a log which I'm sure could have something to do with it. It 's making the noise in neutral and gets alot worse when u try to put it in gear, and it doesn't go in gear.
