Working on my first motor...trying to ignore the phrase "the best day of a boat owner is the day they sold it"

Are the Carbs in a sealed unit? What would make the motor seem as if it ran out of gas? Which adjustment effects the air and which one effects the fuel...top or bottom? What is a reasonable rate to expect for labor?

This is a learner boat and I am okay with that, I just want to feel confident it will get be back to shore.

The motor, other than just being "off" a little, runs...starts...and sounds amazing!

It really helps if you give all the info.

is this new to you?
how did it run previously?
what have you done so far?

Meantime, get the factory service book, rebuild kits for carbs and read the faq files on carb work, its very very simple to do. Then do it.;)

the carbs are not a sealed unit, but has non adjustable jets.

what would make it seem like it is running out of gas? vent not open and clear on fuel tank, weak fuel pump, stuck float needle valves in carb. dirty low speed jets.

read this, especially ethanol, and carb cleaning. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

Re: 1977 85hp evinrude Carb issues

tashasdaddy, thank you for the help...it seems many boaters owe you a dept of gratitude.
I asked if the carbs were in a sealed unit, because the previous owner did seal the cover once he replaced it the last time.....for some reason.

I had the carbs cleaned and the idle adjusted, and boy oh boy does she sound amazing (could be just me cause I am excited)!! After about 7-10 minutes on idle she still dies out. I am working on the fuel lines as you suggested, but I am still baffled. I took apart the fuel lines at each "junction" and everything seems to be flowing as it should. I have a feeling you are going to reiterate the importance of the fuel lines, but why would she run so well then die off...wait 30 min ( or take out the spark plugs and dry) then start her again getting the same results in 7-10 mins? Is there an automatic choke that could be creating a problem?

I have a manual on order, but I must admit most of the information I have read seems written in a different language.

Any help is appreciated!

jonesg...thanks for your help as well. The boat is new to me, previous owner started up, got me excited so I bought it. Took it out on the lake, got stranded, still at square 1

check your spark as soon as it dies, may be coil or power pack, heating up and failing.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see where you tried pumping the bulb to keep it going. Give that a shot.

Also, any new-to-you motor with an unknown service record should have the impeller (or full water pump) replaced. I don't even bother thinking about it, it's an automatic.

iwombat.... i didn't Even think about that in my description. Yes pumping the ball did keep it going momentarily and so did engaging the choke. Both kept it going but it was a work out, the second you stopped so did the motor

hrm curiouser and curiouser . . .

I think both of those things together kind of point to a stuck or misadjusted float. Bulb by itself points to a fuel pump issue. I'd say check your floats and float valves first. Make sure they're operating properly and that the clip around the float valve needle that holds it to the float has been installed. If all that checks out, move on to the fuel pump.
